Startup Idea #7: Genome mapping coaching & consulting

Updated: Dec 21, 2022

Idea: Genome mapping coaching. Once you get the genome mapping results of your child from 23&Me, we will help you develop an action plan to improve your child's future.

Problem: In the last 15 years, the price of genome mapping has decreased 1,000%, and gone from only reading 92% of genomes to 100%, but people are still not sure what to do with the results.

Insight: Genome mapping can tell parents whether their children have a predisposition towards things such as alcoholism, abuse, or depression. When parents find this out, they will need support in figuring out an action plan.

Validation method: Do some research, and figure out which of your friends have already had 23&Me tests completed. Ask them for a copy of the results, and their behaviour change after receiving them. Post ads leading to a landing page. Text: "Got your 23&Me results? So what? Click here to see 'now what'". Two business models. One could be a one-day workshop for up to 25 people, modelled after a StrengthsFinder workshop. Second one could be personalised coaching, similar to a career counsellor.

Notes: There are few fields which have moved as quickly as genome mapping (read Blueprint by Robert Plomin) has in the last 15 years. Thanks to a few breakthrough twin studies, we can see that genes play a far larger part in the people we become than expected. Our ability to learn a language, lose weight, become addicted to substances has as much as a 70% correlation to our genes. Fortunately, governments, schools, and workplaces have been slow to take the genome testing seriously, but parents have started to use them on their newly born children.

Why am I doing this? I’m an innovation consultant who helps businesses build new products, and ventures. And I want people to see how easy it is to build, and validate an initial business idea. Hopefully inspiring them to start their own business.

Am I worried that people will take the ideas? I hope they do. These ideas will hopefully make the world a better place. Just remember, “Ideas are cheap. Execution is everything”. What’s most likely is that within a month of testing the idea, the idea would have completely pivoted, but this is a starting point.
